V-League Pitch Violence: 'Follow the Rules' — A Slogan or a Commitment?

On September 20, at Dong Nai Stadium, Huynh Tấn Sinh delivered a brutal kick to Nguyen Dinh Bac from behind during the V-League 2026-27 match between Dong Nai and Hanoi Police. Referee Le Vu Linh only showed a yellow card, despite the severity of the foul. The incident was part of a growing wave of violence: Doan Van Hau broke Doan Ngoc Tan's leg, Ezeqiuel stamped on Vo Huu Viet Hoang, and Le Van Son elbowed Nguyen Dinh Bac. VFF, VPF and league organizers held an emergency meeting with the referee board, demanding that officials follow the rules strictly. Former VFF referee chief Duong Vu Lam publicly criticized Le Vu Linh for the missed red card and questioned VAR's role. Lam also suggested that if referees are quietly disciplined, their absence from upcoming match lists would reveal the truth—but such secrecy undermines public trust. The real issue is not ignorance of the rules but a culture of tolerance. Referees hesitate, VAR is ambiguous, and disciplinary actions are not transparent. Unless VFF imposes strict public penalties and empowers referees to act decisively, violence will continue. Silent stadiums may not attract attention, but history will record every missed call. Vietnamese football must choose between bold reform and repeating its darkest cycles.
